(MENAFN) Sweetened beverages, sugary drinks and electronic smoking devices will be added into a list of excise taxable products by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Effective January 1st of next year, the move will be cutting the use of harmful products and adjust the behaviors of clients, a cabinet general secretariat statement assured.
The UAE is also aiming through the move to back efforts the government is making to avoid chronic diseases related to sugar and tobacco consumption, the statement noted.
It added: "a tax of 50 percent will be levied on any product with added sugar or other sweeteners, whether in form of a beverage, liquid, concentrate, powders, extracts or any product that may be converted into a drink."
