(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) KABUL - The newly appointed Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission(AIHRC) chief on Thursday said the intensity of war in the country hasrestricted people's access to their rights and paved the way for massviolations.
Shahrzad Akbar, the newly appointed AIHRC head, said this in her firstremarks after her introduction by the president to her position.
On her twitter account, she said the AIHRC was one of the country'simportant institutes and an achievement of the Constitution. 'Working in thiscommission and leading it is my highest pride and great responsibility, 'sheadded.
She also thanked the former head of the commission, Sima Samar, for herservices and congratulated her on her new position as state minister for humanrights and international relations.
'Last year when I sent my documentsto the recruitment process for the commission, I was hopeful I would find achance to serve in this important and national institute.
'I am happy I will have the chance to work with a different and strong teamthat has theoretical and practical backgrounds in the human rights area, shesaid.
She said working for human rights was a time-consuming and hard task andpeople of different classes were worried about their basic rights in future.
On the other hand, severity of the war in the country has limited people'saccess to their rights and paved the way for grave violations leading todisasters.
'I hope my colleagues would be able in this critical time to support thebasic rights of people of this country in important national process and wewould be effective in giving access to human rights of people in every cornerof the country. I took the responsibility of a heavy job and we would notsucceed without the support of the people, she said.
Shahrzad Akbar replaced Sima Samar as AIHRC on Wednesday following apresidential decree. Samar ruled the commission for around 18 years. (Pajhwok)
