The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) and Oman India Fertilizer Company (Omifco) have signed an agreement worth RO90,000 for the second phase of the artificial coral reef farm in Sur.

The agreement was signed by H E Dr Hamad bin Said bin Sulaiman al Aufi, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Sharanappa Gedigeri, managing director of Omifco.

The second phase of the project will involve manufacturing and dropping units of artificial reefs. In the first phase in 2016, 25 units of artificial reefs were dropped, which provided a suitable environment for the presence of various marine organisms such as shellfish, algae and sponges.

A survey, follow-up and evaluation were also carried out for 24 months after the landing of these units. These projects aim to reclaim arid marine areas and transform them into a rich natural environment and promote biodiversity by providing an environment conducive to breeding, feeding and protecting marine organisms and contributing to the development of other sectors by attracting diving and entertainment activities.

MoAF affirmed that it is interested in developing projects and programmes to promote the artisanal fishing sector.
