(MENAFN- NewsIn.Asia) "> Colombo, July 18 (newsin.asia) - Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesighe, on Thursday assured the Bar Association of Sri Lanka that his government had not signed the SOFA agreement with the United States.
"The Bar Association sought clarification on SOFA, MCC and the Land Bill. Explained there is no SOFA. They were pleased. Explained the MCC. Told them that the Land Bill is now at the Parliament .They will send their recommendations," Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said in a statement.
President of the Bar Association Kalinga Indatissa PC, Deputy President Shavindra Fernando PC, Secretary Kaushalya Navarathne AAL and other members of the Executive Committee of the BASL were present at the meeting which was held at Temple Trees on Thursday morning.
Sri Lanka's Joint Opposition (JO) earlier this week called for more information to be released to the public on the nature of the talks between the US and Sri Lanka over the SOFA agreement.
JO Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara, speaking to media at the Opposition Leader's office on Wednesday, said questions regarding SOFA remained. The JO pointed out that even though the Prime Minister's office, in a letter on July 6, stated there was no SoFA, because such a document had not been presented to Cabinet, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe told Parliament four days later that even though such an agreement had not been signed, there were talks between the two governments.
