Conserving and Protecting Our Environment

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) The current environmental problems are becoming more sever with each passing minute, but most of us are still not convinced about the impact it has on a personal and societal level. We have been polluting our planet since our emergence but human involvement has become more severe for the climate since the industrial revolution in the 19th century. Pollution is one of the biggest causes of deaths, affecting over a 100 million people. Overexploitation of resources due to the increasing population is a big problem and we need to promote the sustainable use of them.

Mass production of plastics, which began just six decades ago, has accelerated very rapidly—most of it in disposable products that end up as trash. If this goes on any longer, plastic pollution will double over the next thirty years and there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. We must encourage the reduction, recycling and re-use of waste as raw materials for new products.

A new industrial revolution is taking place where the environment is becoming a big part of the discussion. Corporations have joined in on a trend to care about our planet. Environment friendly, eco-friendly, Green Marketing etc. are the terms now used by big and small companies to attract consumers. But, most of these corporations are the biggest polluters. Strong policies and regulations need to be put in place to ensure no more harm is done to our planet.

The younger generation needs to promote recycling and our government and other authorities need to make sure that the upcoming generation is built on sustainable development and promote environmental friendly policies. We, as citizens, need to set examples on an individual level. Non-recyclable and non-biodegradable materials should be banned. Being conscious and considerate towards our planet is not as difficult as it seems. Small acts like switching off unnecessary lights, turning off water taps, using paper bags, planting trees, using public transportation etc. can go a long way in helping the environment.

Conserve water, as it is the most essential resource on our planet. Take short showers, keep the running tap close while brushing, and recycle water at home.

We must refrain from burning our trash out in the open. The fumes released are toxic.

Let us walk more and drive less to conserve fuel. Let's use bicycles and scooters for shorter distances to save resources.

We need to treat other places like we treat our homes. We need to be considerate and not litter or defecate out in the open.

The Philippines recently took up a unique and wonderful initiative. The island country passed a law under which every student there has to plant ten trees in order to get their graduation degree. The law, if implemented properly, will ensure that over 175 million trees will be planted every year. The law will be applicable for college, elementary, and high school students.

We must act on all the care and love we have for the environment and turn ideas into reality. We must educate others about the significance of living an eco-friendly life. The more awareness there is of the richness of the environment, the more we can do together to protect it.
