Petra celebrates 50th anniversary

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, July 16 (Petra) -- The Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Tuesday celebrated its 50 anniversary as the nation's official new agency and voice to the world. Petra was established on this day in 1969 broadcasting in Arabic and English with a broad focus on local affairs besides regional and international coverage.
Petra has come a long way since its establishment employing fully-computerized news service now with correspondents reporting from a number of key world capitals and decision-making centers. The agency runs a 24-hour service in English and Arabic delivering professional and unbiased coverage of local political, economic and social affairs among other domains.
In a celebration held in Amman today marking the agency's golden jubilee, State Minister for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson, Jumana Ghunaimat, said Petra is a trailblazer in Jordan's media landscape serving as the homeland's mirror to the world over the span of 50 years.
Ghunaimat, who deputized for the prime minister, said Petra, since its inception, took upon itself to carry the Kingdom's message to the world professionally and responsibly and has been the platform from which local and regional media outlets sought neutral and professional content.
The minister emphasized that Petra has been a key pipeline for other local and Arab medial outlets through its qualified and seasoned desk editors and field reporters who left their fingerprint in the wider media domain locally and regionally.
Ghunaimat, who is the chair of Petra's board, said the government is committed to upgrading official media channels to ensure transparent and accurate reporting that reflects positively on the Kingdom's image here in the region and beyond.
Petra Acting Director-General, Fairouz Mubaideen, said Petra is a balanced platform and witness to the nation's achievements, hailing the tireless efforts of its staff now and then. Mubaideen pledged that Petra will continue to deliver quality reporting based on the highest degrees on professionalism and ethical standards.
On the sidelines of the ceremony held at the Royal Cultural Center in central Amman, Ghunaimat honored a number of Petra's former directors and employees who spent 25 years in service.
The minister also opened a photo gallery featuring the agency's 50-year archive which stands witness to the Kingdom's rich history and turning points.
