(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar Charity (QC) has held a roundtable discussion, ‘Humanitarian and Development Challenges of Internal Displacement in the Arab World', in co-operation with the Centre for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies and Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
This came as part of the collaborative efforts between Qatar Charity and IDMC, which resulted in the publication of the Arabic version of the ‘Global Report on Internal Displacement' (GRID) 2019.
The discussion was held at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies and moderated by Professor Sultan Barakat, director of the Centre for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies. The event was attended by Alexandra Bilak, director of IDMC; Mohamed al-Ghamdi, assistant CEO for the Governance & Institutional Development Sector at Qatar Charity; and other participants representing Qatari civil society organisations, in addition to researchers and those interested in the issues of the displaced, refugees and migrants.
Bilak presented a summary of GRID 2019, mentioning the most significant conditions of internal displacement around the world. She highlighted the political efforts needed to address the effects of internal displacement, stressing that internal displacement had become a chronic problem concentrated in urban settings, which required concerted domestic and international efforts to develop policies and improve practices to address the problem.
'The phenomenon of internal displacement is very pervasive in the Arab and Muslim world for several factors, including human factors like internal conflicts and human rights violations in some countries, including Syria and Yemen, as well as natural factors like disasters, said Professor Barakat. 'The presence of human factors along with natural factors in an area can ultimately lead to a major humanitarian catastrophe.
Al-Ghamdi added, 'Participation in the roundtable discussion came as part of the co-operation between Qatar Charity, IDMC and Doha Institute for Graduate Studies to discuss more on the issues of the displaced and share ideas with interested people.
'Efforts should be made to take advantage of the data and information provided in the annual report of IDMC and deliver its findings to the decision-makers.
He also noted that the displacement issue has become a source of concern for charitable and humanitarian organisations, emphasising the importance of joint action to address this crisis.
The participants discussed the main reasons that lead to internal displacement and its effects, especially in the Arab region where large communities are suffering due to disasters and conflicts. They also discussed the outputs of the annual report for 2019 issued by IDMC and the importance of its Arabic version, underlining the need for an universal political will to eliminate the phenomenon of internal displacement.
