GENEVA, July 11 (KUNA) -- The Executive Director of External Relations and Governance of the World Health Organization (WHO), Jane Ellison, on Thursday praised the organization's relations with Kuwait, which also includes many understandings in dealing with health and humanitarian issues.
This came during a meeting Ellison held with Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim, at the Geneva headquarters.
She explained to KUNA that Kuwait's support to the WHO Emergency Fund is of great importance for several reasons especially as Kuwait is one of the first countries which takes an initiative to cover emergency health programs and this speed is well suited to critical situations requiring urgent intervention.
Ellison said Kuwait's generous funding to deal with emergency health conditions has contributed to prevent the worsening of the situation in the affected areas, because dealing with health disasters in its early stages not only reduces the health consequences but also reduces the cost of dealing with the consequences.
She stressed that the Kuwaiti support is aimed primarily at saving human life and preventing the spread of epidemics and diseases and alleviating the suffering of those affected.
She said the emergency fund of the World Health Organization has implemented 30 projects around the world during the past year, notably the rapid interventions to deal with the victims of the devastating cyclone that hit large parts of southeastern Africa.
Kuwait's support for the fund also facilitated the launch of the cholera control program before it was exacerbated among millions of victims of South-East Africa hurricanes, she said.
For his part, Ambassador Al-Ghunaim told KUNA that cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the area of Emergency Fund is vital for many cases that require urgent intervention.
He pointed out that Kuwait's cooperation with the various mechanisms of the World Health Organization is going well in various fields as Kuwait is so keen to make its humanitarian policies practical and implementable.(end).
