China and Sri Lanka discuss climate change and marine environment issues


(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) China and Sri Lanka has discussions on climate change and marine environment issues.

On the invitation of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research, the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, Priyangika Dharmasena, attended the inauguration ceremony and the Workshop of the 5th China-Sri Lanka Joint Workshop on Monsoon Climate and Marine Environment Change, which was held for the first time in China. The previous joint- workshops were held in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Scholars and officials attached to the universities of Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa, Peradeniya, Open University, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Meteorological Development, and relevant Chinese scholars participated at the workshops, which consisted of presentations and question and answer sessions. The developments in the areas of climate change and marine environment were discussed and reviewed upon during the presentations.

Consul General in her address said that conducting regular workshops would help 'find solutions' to important areas of global interest and 'update our knowledge on the changes taking place in our environment.'

The Consul General also spoke about the two seasonal monsoons in Sri Lanka, on which the country depends for her annual rainfall, and agricultural needs. She further stated that a changing environment can influence the management of resources and infrastructure in Sri Lanka.

Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development, W.P. Sandanayake and Director of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research Prof. Dongxiao Wang also addressed the gathering.
