(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, June 28 (KUNA) -- The Arab League strongly denounced late Thursday any steps by members of the international community to move their respective embassies to the occupied city of Jerusalem.
This denouncement was delivered by Arab League's permanent observer at UN and international organizations headquarters in Geneva Ambassador Ali Al-Sammak to the sixth session of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
Ambassador Al-Sammak stressed to the meeting that such steps were in direct violation of international laws concerning the city of Jerusalem, which is under continuous threat from Israeli aggressive polices aiming to change the demographic and historical natures of the sacred city.
Israel violated the tenets of the fourth Geneva Convention and resolutions by UNESCO connected with the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, affirmed Al-Sammak who indicated that the Israeli continuous violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque required a consistent UNESCO presence to record and document such horrifying incidents.
He added that the Arab League condemned Israeli steps to harass individuals of other faiths, namely Muslims and Christians, as well as Israel's attempts to attack sacred sites.
Ambassador Al-Sammak revealed that the Arab League called on the UN and the UN Secretary Council to take action against Israel and halt its unjust policies against Palestinians and their rights in freedom and dignity.
The protection of sacred places and Palestinian land is an international responsibility, which should refuse attempts at disfiguring history and heritage, said the Arab League official.
The world should not stand still in silence while Israel continues to take matters in its own hands, stressed Al-Sammak who deemed the Israelis unlawful steps in Jerusalem as inhumane and brutal.
He added that Arabs still seek peace through the initiative launched in the Arab Summit of Beirut in 2002, insisting that the last summit in Tunisia continued the call for peace and asked for condemning any Israeli acts aimed at changing the very nature of Jerusalem.
Ambassador Al-Sammak touched on the strong support by the current US administration to Israel, saying that the American embassy re-location to Jerusalem was a disastrous step hindering peace and the stability in the region. (end)
