Afghanistan's World Cup Campaign Descends into Chaos


(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) KABUL - Afghanistan cricket coach Phil Simmons on Wednesday took exceptionto his criticism and openly lashed out at chief selector Dawlat Ahmadzai afterthe minnows lost all five group games in the ongoing World Cup.
Ahmadzi believes the coaching team is at fault and has blamed the coachingstaff for the five successive defeats suffered by the team at the start of thecompetition, the latest of which came to England at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The former bowler believes the backroom staff, led by former West Indiesallrounder Simmons, has failed to prepare the team properly for the country's secondappearance in the 50-over competition.
In response, Simmons, 56, took exception to the criticism and pledged toreveal all about Ahmadzi's own influence on proceedings, including the detailsregarding the decision to replace Asghar Afghan as captain less than two monthsbefore the tournament.
"I am in the middle of a World Cup and trying to get our team toperform to the level we expect," Simmons, who will leave his role at theend of the tournament, wrote on Twitter.
'But at the end of the World Cup I will tell the Afghanistan people about the part that Dawlat Ahmadzai had toplay in our preparation and his part in the dismissal of Asghar Afghan.
Asghar was replaced as captain of the team in all three formats andreplaced by Gulbadin Naib for the World Cup in April, a decision which wasquestioned by a number of senior players. (Pajhwok)
