Volker to visit Ukraine in coming weeks

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker has said he intends to visit Kyiv in the coming weeks, and this visit will precede the talks between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States in Washington.

Volker said this at a U.S. Senate hearing on June 18, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"I hope we are able to assemble another trip to Ukraine in advance of his [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's] White House visit in the next several weeks," he said.

In this regard, he noted that Donald Trump's administration was positive about establishing direct contacts with the new Ukrainian president.

"Secretary [Mike] Pompeo called candidate Zelensky and also then President [Petro] Poroshenko on the eve of the elections. President Trump called to congratulate President Zelensky on the night of the election," the diplomat said.

He also recalled that Trump had written to President Zelensky inviting him to visit the White House, but the parties still need to agree on the date of the visit.

"We hope that is soon," Volker said.
