The defending champions, Qatar yesterday defeated Afghanistan in straight sets (22-09), (31-07) to clinch their third consecutive win at the 7th AHF Asian Beach Handball Championship which is being held in Weihai, Shandong Province, China.

In their previous matches, Qatar had beaten Philippines 2-0 on Saturday before outplaying Indonesia in similar fashion to top their group.

Qatar are drawn in Group A, which also features Vietnam, Chinese Taipei, Afghanistan, Indonesia and Philippines.

Group B includes Oman, Iran, Thailand, Pakistan, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.

Today is a rest day and Qatar will next meet Chinese Taipei in their fourth Group match tomorrow.

Qatar's fifth and final group match will be played against Vietnam on Thursday.

One more victory will earn the four-time champions Qatar a direct entry to the semi-final stage.

Top two teams of each group will advance to the semis while the rest of the teams will compete for 5 to 12 spots. The final will take place on June 24.

The championship in China serves as a qualifier for both the 2019 ANOC World Beach Games in Qatar and the 2020 IHF Men's and Women's Beach Handball Championships to be held in Italy.

The top two teams in both the men's and women's competitions will receive a direct ticket to Italy.
