VIENNA, June 18 (KUNA) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has abstained from officially and publicly reacting to Iran's latest move, unchaining itself from some of the commitments in the 2015 nuclear deal.
IAEA sources told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the international agency, as an independent and technical body, does not comment on news in the media. Moreover, the sources decline to confirm whether the IAEA received a notification from Tehran regarding its decision to free itself from some of the obligations, stipulated in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Nevertheless, the sources that requested anonymity urged the JCPOA stakeholders to preserve "the gains" achieved by working the agreement between Iran and super powers.
The IAEA, in its latest report, along with the Director General Yukia Amano, has expressed dissatisfaction with a decision by the Iranian Supreme Security Council, on May 8, unilaterally halting "some of the measures" stipulated by the JCPOA.
Amano has expressed concern about mounting tensions regarding the Iranian nuclear issue affirming that the IAEA experts have been examining Tehran's nuclear activity to ensure that they do not violate the accords with the international agency.
The IAEA is the main authority responsible for implementing the deal, inked in Vienna in July 2015, along with the JCPOA, which went into effect in 2016.
Stakeholders are currently alarmed at Tehran's new announcement that it is wriggling itself of limitations set in the deal with respect of uranium enrichment.
Amano has been regularly, for three years, briefing members of the IAEA Board of Governors about extent of Iran's adherence to the nuclear agreement and the plan of action.
The IAEA is scheduled to release its regular report in this respect either in August or early September.
Iran and the United States of America have been locked in a fiery war of words since Washington solely withdrew from the nuclear deal. The defiant Iranian stances regarding the nuclear deal have come amid the tit-for-tat rhetorical escalation between Tehran and Washington.
The Iranians have been particularly dismayed with Washington's re-impositon of mainly economic sanctions on the nation and have been seeking to persuade the Europeans to abstain from following suit. (end) amg.rk
