The Ministry of Tourism has announced its preparedness for the khareef season, which will begin on June 21 and continue till September 21.

It is one of the most important tourist seasons attracting visitors from inside and outside the sultanate due to the moderate weather in Dhofar governorate which suits Omani and Gulf families in particular.

Marhoon bin Saeed al Ameri, director general of tourism in Dhofar governorate, said 34 hotel establishments are ready for the season. They have a total of 4,115 rooms with 6,312 beds. He said that the hotel sector is well prepared for the khareef season through many aspects. New hotel establishments came up between May and December last year and they include seven new hotels from two to five-star categories. This was to meet the increasing requirements of accommodation of tourists in the governorate, as every year the number of tourists increases.

The Dhofar's director general of tourism said that the Rotana Hotel and Al Fanar Hotel have completed their expansion into Hawana Salalah destination. The four-star Millennium Hotel opened in Al Saadah area. Similarly, work on the four-star Bilad Point Hotel project has also completed.

'We expect that it will open during the current khareef season. A number of hotels and commercial complexes such as three-star Bristol Hotel will open in Al Saadah area. This is in addition to Al Saadah City Mall, Al Saadah Commercial Complex and Al Waha Mall in the industrial zone,' he added.

He pointed out that the number of tourists who came to Dhofar in the khareef season in 2018, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), was 826,376, which was an increase of 28.1 per cent over 2017. 'We expect that during the coming khareef season the number of tourists will further increase or would be the same at least.' He said that the conditions in the sultanate and the Governorate of Dhofar in particular suited for increase in the number of tourists.

Last year, there were unstable climate conditions which briefly hit the governorate during khareef season. He said that there were indications that the climate conditions during khareef this year would be appropriate for more activities.

He said that all government organisations concerned with the khareef season are fully prepared to provide comfort to the tourists in the governorate.

A series of meetings of these organisations were held to review the level of preparedness to receive tourists during the season. These government organisations and authorities are committed to making the season a success. He said that there is enough cooperation and coordination between the office of the Minister of State, Governor of Dhofar, Dhofar Municipality, the Royal Oman Police, NCSI and other government organisations as well as tourism partners from the private sector such as Salalah Airport and hotel establishments and tourism offices.
