Doha: United Development Company (UDC), one of Qatar's leading public shareholding companies and the master developer of The Pearl-Qatar and Gewan islands, has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Interior's Traffic Department to promote road safety across The Pearl-Qatar.
The Ministry of Interior inaugurated the new traffic department at the Pearl, as part of its plan to expand service centres to keep up with the urban development and to facilitate access to services for citizens, residents and visitors.
The new office has 14 counters, providing up to 90 percent of the traffic services and procedures which are provided at the main centre, including investigations, registration, licensing, traffic investigation and other services.
Brigadier Mohamed bin Saad Al Kharji, Director General of the General Directorate of Traffic, and UDC President and CEO and Member of The Board, Ibrahim Jassim Al Othman, co-signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) during a ceremony that brought together senior officials from both sides at the Oyster Building and Traffic Department Centre in The Pearl-Qatar.
In line with the MoU, the Traffic Department will assign units to conduct round-the-clock patrols across The Pearl-Qatar, while offering residents and visitors of the island a range of services through a dedicated control and operations centre.
The centre will monitor traffic violations, investigate accidents, and process vehicle registration and licensing applications in addition to other services aimed at easing traffic and ensuring road safety across the island.
UDC will provide the necessary support to the Traffic Department for the implementation of the initiative, including the provision of a workstation in Medina Centrale, communication equipment and the collection of information on abandoned vehicles.
Commenting on the MoU, Brigadier Mohamed bin Saad Al Kharji, Director General of the General Directorate of Traffic, said: 'Qatar attaches great importance to traffic safety, where the state-level efforts have resulted in a reduction in the road fatalities and serious injuries, as part of the second phase implementation of the Road Safety Strategy 2018-2022.
UDC President and CEO and Member of The Board, Ibrahim Jassim Al Othman said: 'UDC is proud to partner with the Ministry of Interior to further improve the public services for the island's residents, tenants, and visitors alike. The agreement falls within the efforts of all concerned entities to further enhance services for citizens.
The Pearl-Qatar is still attracting an increasing number of visitors, as evidenced by the year-on-year increase in the number of vehicles entering the island with over 13 million vehicles entering The Pearl-Qatar last year, a 17 percent increase from 2017.
It is worth mentioning that UDC has also launched a number of initiatives during recent years to improve its offerings and provide residents and visitors with effortless and time-saving access to services in close proximity to their area of residence or business.
In this regard, single window services ‘Khadamati' were announced in 2017 to facilitate the processing of selected transactions for investors, retailers and residents of the island including the facilitation of passport and immigration-related services, traffic department paperwork, company registration and licensing, medical institution licensing and medical commission services, civil defence services and customs clearance among many other services.
