Oman- MoCI urges parents to purchase only toys apt for children's age

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- To ensure that toys marketed in the sultanate are safe for children, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) stated that it has issued more than 2,000 toy safety certificates between January 2018 and March 2019.
Elaborating on the importance of issuing such certificates, MoCI said it issued 2,149 certificates. The ministry stated that its certificates are issued in adherence to the Gulf standard regulations for all toys for children up to the age of 14.
The ministry has urged consumers to buy only age-appropriate toys and games for their children. Ignoring this information could put lives of children at risk, MoCI stated.

'Usually, the appropriate age for each toy is written on the descriptive information data card of the toys. This is certified by the Gulf technical regulations for children's games number: BD131704-01. It is important as it determines the mandatory safety requirements.'

The regulations also include products that are not intended as toys but look-alike ones (e.g those made for decorative purposes). These include decorations for holidays and festivals, collector's items like popular dolls, showpiece dolls, replicas of weapons, puzzles and building blocks with more than 500 pieces. Items like infant lollipops, children's lighting devices, electric toys, children's decorative accessories, scooters, fire toys and educational products should be used under the supervision of adults.

The ministry also stated these regulations include a number of other general safety requirements keeping in mind physical, mechanical, chemical and flammability risk.

'Chemicals used in certain toys should comply with the rules. The amount of lead or any other chemical in these toys should not be more than the permissible limit. Similarly, it is not allowed for children's toys to contain any elements or substance which produce any radioactive rays which are harmful for children,' MoCI stated.
