Kuwaiti woman gets 16 mnts prison for maid abuse

(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY, June 12: The Court of Appeals upheld the verdict of the Court of First Instance that sentenced a Kuwaiti woman – sponsor of a housemaid who attempted suicide in Sabah Al-Salem Area – to one year and eight months in prison. The woman was found guilty of abusing the maid and refusing to help her when she sought for assistance. The incident occurred in 2017 when the video clip recorded by the suspect was widely circulated on social media.

The clip showed the maid holding on to the window with one hand while seeking assistance from the woman to rescue her, but the latter declined until the former finally fell to the ground and sustained injury.

In the meantime, a Kuwaiti citizen filed a lawsuit at the Fast Track Court against Ministry of Commerce and Industry, asking the court to obligate the ministry to suspend the use of the realestate application 'Waseet' (real estate broker) which the ministry uploaded and ran on its website without consulting him.

The plantiff counsel Lawyer Hussain Bu Shaiba explained that it was his client who created the app and gave it the name 'Real Estate' as well as obtained the relevant patent. The app is thus the intellectual property of his client due to which his permission is required in order to use the app. He urged the court to suspend the use of the app from the ministry's website until a verdict is issued in the session to be held on Oct 10.
