Team from HMC's Internal Medicine Program awarded 4th place in International Competition

A group of residents from the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently placed fourth in an international competition, ‘Doctors Dilemma', in the US.

The competition was held during the American College of Physicians meeting in Philadelphia, US, and brought together teams of residents from 60 different internal medicine training programs from the US and Canada, with the team from Qatar being the only group competing from outside North America.

'This annual competition is one of the most established and challenging of its kind in the world, said Dr Ahmed Al Mohammed, Internal Medicine Residency Program Director.

'Throughout the three-day competition, residents were tested on their competence and medical knowledge. This was the first time a group from Qatar had entered the international event and to come fourth out of 60 incredibly strong teams is a remarkable achievement, added Dr Al Mohammed.

The first stage of the competition saw all 60 teams compete against each other, with the strongest six teams then going through to a final round to decide the winning teams.

'We are incredibly proud of the way in which the internal medicine residency group performed throughout the competition. Our residency programs at HMC provide trainee doctors with the skills and knowledge required to make them into excellent healthcare professionals capable of playing leading roles in the delivery of clinical care to patients. For our internal medicine residents to perform so well and to be formally recognized in this competition is an enormous credit to them and to the standard of training we provide at HMC, said Dr Dabia Al Mohanadi, Deputy Program Director.

In 2012, HMC became the first hospital system in the region to achieve the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International certification. This made Qatar only the second country outside of the United States to have the prestigious accreditation conferred upon it, which indicates that it meets the highest and most rigorous standards for physicians' specialty training.

To date, fourteen of HMC's residency training programs have successfully achieved ACGME International program accreditation.
