Doha: Head of Conservation and Energy Efficiency Department at Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), Abdul Aziz Ahmad Al Hamadi has said that new regulations of Tarsheed law is expected to be issued by the end of this year to make air-conditioners and other electric home appliances more energy efficient.
He said that under new regulations the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of split unit air-conditioners will be increased from existing 9.5 EER to 10.5 EER. The move is part of a major plan of National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) run by Kahramaa which aims at reducing per capita electricity consumption by six percent, water by 10 percent, and carbon footprint by seven percent by the end of 2022.
'We are working with our partners to prepare new regulations to implement phase 2 EER of air conditioners, Al Hamadi told The Peninsula.
He said that new specifications and standardisation are being made to increase EER of split unit air-conditioners and upgrade the energy efficiency of other electric home appliances like refrigerators, washing machines and ovens.
'Kahramaa is working with authorities concerned like Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Ministry of Commerce and Industry to finalise the new regulations, said Al Hammadi adding that it is expected to be issued by the end of this year.
Under 2019-20 Tarsheed plan, Kahramaa is to adopt conservation and energy efficiency regulations for electrical appliances and plumbing code by the end of 2019, according to a report released by Kahramaa recently.
The implementation of this project will achieve energy saving for 2020 by 755GWh, which constitutes 1.5 percent of the total annual consumption of 2020 and following years.
Under Tarsheed programme a number of initiatives were implemented last year to reduce the consumption of electricity and water and cut carbon footprint.
The most important initiative in 2018 was ‘Tarsheed SMS' which helped save about QR45m by reducing 850.43MCF natural gas consumption through conservation of the uses of electricity and water significantly.
The SMS initiative was launched in July 2016 to inform all customers with the highest consumption in the residential sector of their monthly consumption of electricity and water and the value of the relevant invoice.
The initiative made a significant impact on changing the behavior of consumers in the residential sector, especially citizens, regarding the conservation of electricity and water. For example, many people rapidly reformed leaks in their homes after realising that they had exceeded the optimal rate of water consumption in 2018.
