Indonesian couple die in KL parking garage collapse

(MENAFN- Asia Times) An Indonesian couple was killed and three construction workers injured when a multi-story parking garage under construction in Kuala Lumpur suddenly collapsed in the early hours of Thursday.

The Gombak Integrated Transport Terminal parking facility on Jalan Taman Melati reportedly collapsed at around 1am while five workers were preparing Ramadan breakfasts on the ground floor, the China Press reported.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department dispatched teams from the Wangsa Maju and Gombak South stations to the location for a rescue operation after receiving a report about the drama at 1:13am.

Officers arrived at the scene to find two construction workers dead – and in each other's arms. The man and the woman – identified as Alias, 36, and Ima, 40 – were believed to have been crushed to death by falling iron beams.

Their bodies were pulled out by 2am and sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Two other workers – a man and a woman of unknown nationalities – were reportedly injured and taken to hospital, while a third injured person was revealed to be a Bangladeshi man who was trapped under the rubble. He was extracted just after 7am after his left arm was amputated by two doctors at 6:45am.

Construction of the parking garage had reportedly been halted for some hours over safety concerns.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the building's collapse, and reportedly said the its weak structure was a possible cause.
