Amman, May 22 (Petra) Prime Minister Omar Razzaz Wednesday reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguarding the citizen's freedom to express their opinions freely under the constitution and the law.
In a meeting with directors of public security, gendarmerie and civil defense departments as well as governors, which was attended by Interior Minister Salama Hammad, the Prime Minister outlined the government's vision and priorities in enhancing the state of law and enforcing the law equally on all.
He said the government seeks to reassert the state's prestige as the foundation of true and effective citizenship, referring to challenges facing Jordanian society, top of which are the spread of drugs use and its risks on society and youth, weapons and smuggling.
The prime minister said that enhancing the prestige of the state comes through the enforcement of the law fairly and equally within the balance between rights and obligations, which was underlined by His Majesty King Abdullah's Discussion Papers.
He also spoke about assaults on civil servants, doctors and nurses, calling these alien to Jordanians' ethics and traditions and referring to the measures taken by the Ministry of the Interior in this respect. However, he added, the law governing such attacks must be revisited to ensure a stiffer penalty.
The Interior Minister said concerted efforts and close coordination are needed by all security bodies, local administrators and stakeholders to achieve security and stability and fight all types of crime.
He said that enforcing the rule of law and the prestige of the state is the cornerstone of the progress and development of societies.
