(MENAFN) A police spokesperson declared that over five people have died on site and 15 more critically wounded in a Sunday night road crash in the eastern Ugandan district of Soroti.
Michael Odongo, East Kyoga regional police spokesperson, confirmed that the deadly collision took place after a driver of a truck with over 70 mourners on board, avoided a head-on crash with another truck shifting oranges and flipped over at Opiyai village, along the Soroti-Serere road at about 10:30 p.m. local time.
He added that the mourners were going back from the eastern district of Kapelebyong to Serere where they had attended a relative's burial.
Odongo added:"The accident was a result of reckless driving and overloading. The people who were overloaded fell off as the driver avoided the head-on collision".
