(MENAFN) Local police declared that over nine police personnel have died as another ten were wounded in clashes after the Taliban opened fire in a rural district in Afghanistan's northern province of Badakhshan.
Spokesman Sanaullah Rouhani confirmed: "Militants stormed security checkpoints in the outer neighborhood of Tashkan district Saturday night, triggering a gunfight. Sporadic clashes were ongoing Sunday around the district center and its local bazaar as security forces are fighting back the assailants,"
He added that many militants have been shot dead and injured in the battle in the district, south of provincial capital Faizabad city, however, the number wasn't clear yet.
