Ottawa, May 15 (Petra) - Montreal Mayor, Valerie Plante, announced her opposition to the controversial secularism bill, proposed by Quebec's new government, official sources announced Wednesday.
The bill, also known as Bill 21, prohibits public sector workers, including teachers and police officers, from wearing religious symbols while working, including headscarf of Muslim women.
In a press conference, Plante told the reporters that the proposed bill may cause tension in the society, adding that it targets minorities and affects women more than men, and does not include any further details on how to be applied.
"When it comes to fundamental rights, people should not be afraid of their faith," she said, stressing that diversity in Montreal is the source of its strength and that immigrants and minorities must be seen as a source of strength rather than a source of fear.
The Mayor concluded her speech saying that the minority culture in Montreal mingle on a daily basis, and Canada do not want social cohesion to be at risk.
