Nadhira poised to be first Omani woman to scale Mount Everest

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Nadhira al Harthy is attempting to become first Omani woman to reach Mt Everest summit. She has already started her ascent to the highest peak in the world and was heading towards Camp 2 (6,400m) on Tuesday.

With a Master's degree in Geography, Nadhira had always loved hiking and climbing but her ambition to scale Mt Everest set her apart from the rest.

She trained for two years and ran 90km adventure races, trained on Ama Dablam mountain in Nepal and did all that was necessary to make her reach the highest peak a reality. 'I learnt to believe in my capabilities and show others that their dreams are possible too,' she was quoted as saying by Elia Saikaly, the award-winning adventure filmmaker and two times Mt Everest summit finisher.

Saikaly is documenting the trip Nadhira and three other women from Arabia are making to the Everest, in a film called The Dream of Everest.

The Dream of Everest is a feature length documentary that chronicles the story of these inspiring women from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Oman as they train to climb to the summit of Mt Everest, stated Saikaly.

Apart from Nadhira, the others include Mona Shahab from Saudi Arabia, Nelly Attar and Joyce Azzam from Lebanon.

'What impresses me the most about Nadhira is her sense of self and humble view of her dream to climb to the top of the world. I'm really impressed with her work ethic, sacrifices, courage and her strength in pursuing her dream to become the first Omani woman to scale the world's highest mountain peak.'

After three days of training at the base camp, Saikaly said that one would be hard pressed to find any ice cliffs back home (Oman) in the desert and yet Nadhira made it look easy. 'She's powered through, embraced the discomfort and has come out on top every single time, smiling every step of the way.'

Just after landing in Lukla, one of the most dangerous runways on Earth, from Kathmandu, Nadhira expressed her determination. 'I am ready to start the first step of my dream. I want to make this dream come true,' Saikaly was quoted as saying.
