Oman quartet bags bronze at Asian athletics meet in Doha

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman athletics camp at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, had little to cheer over the past of couple of days as its star athlete, Barakat al Harthi, failed to even make it to the 100m final while the rest of his teammates failed to make a mark.

It was only late on Tuesday evening that Oman managed its first medal at the championships, which too, was won after China relay team was disqualified.

Competing in the 4x100m men's relay final, Oman's quartet of Barakat, Mohammed al Balushi, Mohammed al Saadi and Ammar al Saifi, clocked 39.36s, for a new national record to finish fourth. China was first across the line ahead of an inspired Thai quartet that had sped to a 38.72 championships record in the heats on Monday.

But Chinese quartet was later disqualified for a lane infraction when its lead runner stepped out of his lane on the opening bend, giving the victory to Thailand who clocked 38.99s. Chinese Taipei, which clocked 39.18, were elevated to silver, and Oman to bronze.

Earlier, Barakat made his way to the 100m semis with a season-best time of 10.43.

However, he missed a place in the final despite running his season-best 10.30s, as it was one-hundredth slower than Chinese Taipei's Yang Chun-Han, who timed 10.29.

Oman's other 100m sprinter, Balushi, ran 10.85 for his season-best time to finish overall 30th among 40 athletes.
