Oman- Shonal claims second overall title of season

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) It has been an extraordinary season for seven year old Muscat-based go-karting champion Shonal Kunimal.

Weeks after claiming the Bambino class in the competitive 2018-19 UAE Rotax Max Challenge Series, the Indian School Ghubra-International student claimed the second championship crown on Friday when he took the top honours in the Bambino class of the 2018-19 IAME X30 UAE Series.

Shonal's domination in the series was complete as he made a clean sweep in all the three races in the final round at Ras al Khaimah in UAE.

Shonal is in pursuit of a record hat-trick of series titles this season and his latest success underlines his superiority in his class across different series.

With a healthy lead in the Dubai Bambino Cup and the final round on May 11, a win will ensure Shonal's third title of the season.

At Ras al Khaimah, taking part in the final round, Shonal swept all the three time-trials to garner a total of 875 points for the top honours.

Italian Nicholas Stura, who has been providing the toughest challenge to Shonal in the series, came overall second after finishing runner-up in two time-trials and a third in the last race of the final round.

Stura finished the championship with 784 points while Mohammed al Qassemi, who missed podium finishes in the final round, settled for an overall third with a total of 632 points.

The X30 series is one UAE's most competitive competition and the six rounds were held at the Dubai Kartdrome, Abu Dhabi's Al Forsan Sports Club, and Ras al Khaimah.

Shonal timed 54.838sec in his first time-trial over the 0.876km with Lennard Titica of Bulgaria came second with 55.573. Stura was third (56.218).

In the second race, Shonal had a better pace with a time of 54.581s while Stura was second with a time of 55.349.

And in the last race of the championship and the final round, Shonal capped with the best time of 54.404 to end his IAME X30 season on a high note.

Shonal's IAME X30 series campaign was backed by Al Wahaibi Motor Sports (WMS) and GPX Academy. The young racing talent is coached by former Oman go-karting champion Sanad al Rawahi and Shonal credited his coach for the success.

Shonal's father-cum-manager Shojai Kunimal thanked WMS for the support in the IAME series and Dubai O-Plate by providing technical assistance through Leonardo Abalos.

Shonal had won the Bambino class in the Dubai O-Plate event earlier this year.
