Strong earthquake strikes Philippine, claims 16 lives


(MENAFN) The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council declared that 16 people have been killed in Monday's earthquake of a 6.1-magnitude which rattled the northern Philippines.

Ricardo Salad, executive director of the council confirmed that the earthquake also wounded 81 people as 14 more were uncounted for in central Luzon provinces of Pampanga and Zambales.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Monday's earthquake was determined at 12 km deep into the ground, around 18 km northeast of Castillejos, a town in Zambales province in the western part of Luzon.

After the first quake on Monday, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake startled Eastern Samar province in the central Philippines at 1:37 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
