(MENAFN- Asia Times) A 61-year-old Singaporean employer has launched an appeal to help pay the expenses of his 37-year-old Indonesian domestic caregiver, who had a stroke earlier this month and was hospitalized for three weeks with mounting medical fees of S$60,300 (US$44,475).
The employer, surnamed Saw, is retired and was worried that the insurance he bought covers only S$15,000 in medical bills per year. The hospital fees for his Indonesian worker Ani Sumarni are already quadruple that amount, the Shin Min Daily News reported.
On April 1 Sumarni was feeling unwell and had a severe headache. She took some painkillers, did some domestic chores and then went to her bedroom to rest. Late that night the elderly man was concerned and found her unconscious on her bed.
He called an ambulance and the ill employee was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where she was diagnosed with an ischemic stroke. After two brain surgeries and 10 days in the intensive care unit, she is now in a stable condition, but can only blink and say a few words.
Saw did not want to send her home to Indonesia in the middle of the treatment, but he was not confident he could afford the final bill. He appealed online for public donations and was grateful to receive more than S$45,000 in three days.
He hopes to get enough money to pay for all Sumarni's treatments until her recovery.
