U.S, Japan enter talks for airbase use in Olympics

(MENAFN) Japan and the United States entered the negotiation table for an American airbase to be brought into play during the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Tokyo.

Local media reported that "the [Japanese] government has asked Washington to open the U.S. Air Force base's runway to commercial flights, at least temporarily turning the facility into a civilian-military dual-use airport to increase the capital's air traffic capacity for the 2020 Games," affirming "the U.S. is considering the request."

Back in 2003, daily Mainichi reported, the U.S. decided to approve of an appeal to review the Yokota runway for "possible dual civilian-military use."

It added that "a feasibility study outline was set out in the May 2006 United States-Japan Roadmap for Realignment Implementation, but was not advanced further."
