The Orthopaedic Department at Hamad General Hospital and the Bone and Joint Centre recently organised the first Qatar Cadaveric Pelvis and Acetabular Trauma course.
The course included practical sessions at Aspetar's Cadaveric Lab, with the event being the first hands-on workshop with cadaveric dissection to be organised by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
The two-day course included theoretical interactive sessions on the management of pelvic and acetabular (hip socket) fractures. It also incorporated hands-on dry and wet lab workshops with more than 150 participants, including orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic surgery residents and fellows, nurses and allied health professionals in attendance, HMC said in a statement.

Dr Mohamed al-Ateeq, Bone and Joint Centre director and chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at HMC, said fractures of the pelvis and acetabular were among the most serious injuries treated by orthopaedic surgeons.
'The pelvis is the central foundation of the skeleton. When injured, it can become a potential source of long-term disability and may even be life-threatening. Often the result of a traumatic incident such as a motor vehicle accident or a bad fall, pelvic and acetabular fractures require rapid and precise treatment and, in some cases, one or more surgical procedures, said Dr al-Ateeq.
'The possibility of complications can be quite high, and in some cases surgeons are unfamiliar with the anatomy of the pelvis and the specialised techniques and manoeuvres and implants necessary to treat these injuries. This is why courses of this nature and specialisation are so important to ensure that our clinicians have access to the most up-to-date practices and research, he added.
Dr Ghalib Ahmed, course co-chair and senior consultant at HMC, said the course's scientific programme was developed by local experts as well as representatives from renowned orthopaedic trauma units in the US and Europe.
'We had the privilege of having six international faculty share their knowledge and surgical skills with the attendees, said Dr Ahmed. 'We were also fortunate to be able to use the facilities at Aspetar for hands-on demonstrations and further learning. One of the ultimate goals of the Orthopaedic Department is to provide educational opportunities through conferences and workshops like this one and to help expand the knowledge base and surgical skills of our staff.
