Algerian police arrest 18 foreigners attempting to infiltrate demos


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGERIA, April 18 (KUNA) -- The Algerian security services said Thursday they foiled an attempt by 18 foreign elements to infiltrate the popular demonstrations in the western Oran city last Friday.

The foreigners fired gunshots amidst the mass demonstrations with a view to driving wedges between the peaceful demonstrators and the security services, according to local media reports.

They were timely subdued, interrogated and proved to be nationals of France, Belgium, Canada and the United States who disguised as tourists and intellectuals to enter Algeria.

The security services affirmed commitment to protection of the peaceful demonstrations that entered their ninth week running. (end) mr.gb
