Nepal U19 boys trounce Oman by 150 runs

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman U19 dismal run continued at the ICC Asia U19 World Cup Qualifier as it suffered a 150-run rout at the hands of Nepal in its penultimate match of the tournament at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Tuesday.

It was the third defeat in four matches for the Ghulam Parkar-coached team, which will now take on table-topper, UAE, in the concluding match on Thursday. The defeat on Tuesday was the second successive loss, following its five-wicket defeat to Singapore and dashed Oman's hopes to qualify for the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup.

On Tuesday, up against Nepal, Oman elected to field first in overcast conditions. Captain Prathamesh Kumble's decision appeared to right as Nepal was down to 81 for five in 20 overs with medium-pacers Muzahir Raza and Yash Mehta dismissing the openers.

However, Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel (75) and Bhim Sharki (39) stitched together a 92-run sixth-wicket partnership to put the team on course for a challenging total. Pratis GC's 23-ball 41 saw Nepal finish at 229 in 43.2 overs.

Raza, Azam Ali, Jeel Tanna and Sanjay Ravindra took two wickets each while Kumble and Mehta bagged one each.

Oman's chase was poor and it was tottering at 35-6 in 21 overs with the top and middle order back to pavilion. Had it not for a dogged knocks of 13 runs each by Amanpreet Sirah and Tanna, Oman would have not even crossed 50.

The ninth-wicket stand of 19 saw Oman just delay the inevitable as it folded for paltry 79 in 44.1 overs. Except for Sirah and Tanna, no other batsmen could reach double digits. Pawan Sarraf took three wickets while Pratis and Surya Tamang claimed two wickets each. Kushal Malla, Kamal Singh Airee and Sharki took a wicket each.

Six countries, Malaysia, Nepal, UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Singapore, are competing in the qualifiers with the winner qualifying for the 2020 U19 World Cup.

A win for UAE against Oman on Thursday will secure it a spot in the World Cup.

After four rounds, UAE leads the table with eight games while Nepal is second with six points as it has better net run-rate (NRR) than Kuwait, which also has six points. Oman is fourth with two points but with a better NRR than Singapore (2 pts).

Brief scores: Nepal 229 in 43.2 overs (Paudel 75, Sharki 39, Pratis 41; Raza 2-34, Ravindra 2-41, Ali 2-33, Tanna 2-31) beat Oman 79 in 44.1 overs (Sirrah 13, Tanna 14 n.o.; Sarraf 3-24, Tamang 2-11, Pratis 2-13).
