(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, April 17 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump issued Tuesday evening the second veto of his presidency, rejecting a resolution from Congress to end US support for the war in Yemen.
In a statement, Trump said "this resolution is an unnecessary, dangerous attempt to weaken my constitutional authorities, endangering the lives of American citizens and brave service members, both today and in the future." He added that "this joint resolution is unnecessary because, apart from counterterrorism operations against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and (IS), the United States is not engaged in hostilities in or affecting Yemen." He indicated that since 2015, the US has provided "limited support to member countries of the Saudi-led coalition," and that "none of this support has introduced United States military personnel into hostilities." "We are providing this support for many reasons. First and foremost, it is our duty to protect the safety of the more than 80,000 Americans who reside in certain coalition countries that have been subject to Houthi attacks from Yemen," he noted.
He affirmed that "Houthis, supported by Iran, have used missiles, armed drones, and explosive boats to attack civilian and military targets in those coalition countries, including areas frequented by American citizens, such as the airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia." "In addition, the conflict in Yemen represents a "cheap" and inexpensive way for Iran to cause trouble for the United States and for our ally, Saudi Arabia," he stressed.
Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed the resolution in a 247-175 vote to end US support for the war in Yemen after it was approved by the Senate in a 54-46 vote last month. (end) si.tg
