ICC Asia U19 World Cup Qualifier: Oman U19 boys defeat Malaysia

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A day after suffering a heavy eight-wicket loss to Kuwait, Oman boys recorded a morale-boosting win over Malaysia in the ICC Asia U19 World Cup Qualifier in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

In a rain-affected match, which was played at the Selangor Turf Club, Oman scored 211 for nine in 50 overs. Opener Azam Ali's half-century (50 off 92 balls) was the highlight of the innings. He was involved in an opening stand of 69 with Adeel Abbas (22) to lay a strong foundation. In reply, Malaysia was tottering at 56 for four in 15 overs and finished at 98 for six in 26.1 overs before bad light stopped play.

According to the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern (DLS) method, the hosts' target was 145, giving Oman a 46-run win and its first points.

Mohammed Sameer picked two for 17 while Yash Mehta, Jeel Tanna, Prathamesh Kumble and Sanjay Ravindra had a wicket each.

Earlier on Friday, Oman's campaign started on a disappointing note as it was outplayed by Kuwait at the Bayuemas Oval. Oman captain P Kumble fought hard for his side after winning the toss and choosing to bat. Kumble hit 25 off 64 balls – Oman's top score. Azam Ali managed 22 as Oman was bowled out for paltry 105 in 34.2 overs.

In reply, Kuwait's Meet Bhavsar and skipper Abdul Sadiq added 83 runs between them. Bhavsar hammered 44 from 42 balls while Sadiq remained not out on 39 as Kuwait achieved its target in just 19.3 overs.

The winner of the six-team tournament qualifies for the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup.

Following the conclusion of two rounds on Saturday, Kuwait leads the table with four points and a better net run-rate of +2.763 as against to UAE, which too has four points but has an NRR of +0.189.

Nepal is third with two points, the same as Oman, but with a better NRR. Nepal has +2.700 while Oman has -1.198. Malaysia and Singapore have yet to open their accounts.

After a rest day on Sunday, Oman takes on Singapore on Monday followed by match against Nepal a day later. It meets UAE in its concluding game on April 18.
