Qatar- 30% women, 13% youth delegates participate in IPU meetings

DOHA:The General Secretariat of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which began its work in Doha yesterday, agreed to enable women and young members of the parliamentary delegations participating in the meeting to present their input to the General Assembly's 'public debate meetings and not only to the heads of the delegations.

According to the official figures announced during the coordination meetings, the women members of parliamentary delegations made up 30 percent of the participants, while the young people are 13 percent.

There are 158 countries participating in the meetings of (IPU) and the related meetings, making it the largest of its kind in the Assembly meetings, with 80 countries represented by Speakers of the parliaments.

The coordination meeting of the Secretary Generals revealed that representatives of Venezuelan parliament are participating in Doha meetings exceptionally but they will not have the right to speak or vote in the meetings of the General Assembly because the country had not paid for membership in the Union for two years.

The Egyptian parliamentary delegation, which was scheduled to participate in the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Doha, had made a prior request to speak in the meeting but Egypt, along with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, boycotted the meeting.

At the meeting, Serbia announced that it would host the next General Assembly meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, to be held in Belgrade in October.

At the meeting, the representative of Serbia confirmed her country's readiness to hold the meeting.
