Qatar- Amir to attend opening of 140th Assembly of IPU today

Doha: Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will attend today the opening of the 140th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the Sheraton Hotel, where His Highness will give a speech to mark the occasion.

The opening ceremony will be attended by President of the IPU, Gabriela Cuevas Barron, Under-Secretary for the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Voronkov, and Their Excellencies speakers of parliaments, national councils, legislative councils, senates, and heads of delegations participating in the assembly, in addition to their excellencies members of the union's executive committee, organisations, and regional and international unions.

The coordination meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Group of the 140th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its related meetings, kicked of yesterday here in Doha.

The meeting which was held with participation of the heads of the Arab parliaments was chaired by Atef Al Tarawneh, Chairman of the Arab Parliamentary Union, and Chairman of the Jordanian Parliament.

'We have a number of issues and topics which we are going to be discussed during this great democratic forum, said Al-Tarawneh during the meeting adding that this meeting is a consultative meeting which is preceding the official opening of the 140th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the accompanying meetings.

He pointed out that this meeting was preceded by Arab Parliamentary Union which held in Amman, Jordan and adopted recommendations submitted by the State of Kuwait to put forward an emergency item in the agenda of the 140th General Assembly of (IPU).

'However, a number of countries have proposed several topics to be added as emergency topics during the last days or last week, therefore we hope that this consultative meeting will come out with a clear agenda so that everyone can adopt it.

The Arab parliamentarians discussed the proposals concerning the inclusion of an emergency item to the agenda of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and finally agreed unanimously on a proposal incorporating all the proposals submitted by the member states.

Fayez Al Shawabka, Secretary-General of the Arab Parliamentary Union, read the unanimously approved proposal entitled 'protecting the Palestinian people and rejecting to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights and promoting the values of coexistence between religions and peoples.

This proposal was accepted by members of all the Arab countries participating in the current meetings. The Arab Parliamentary Union is going to discuss with Turkey and Indonesia this topic to adopt it, as their proposal is very similar to the Arabic proposal, which calls for promoting the values of coexistence between religions and peoples. The General Secretariat of the Arab Parliamentary Union named the formation of the current committees of the Union, regardless of who ended their term or who occupies positions which are still vacant.

The meeting reviewed names of those occupying the vacant positions, starting with the Executive Committee represented by Dr. Ali Abdel Al from Egypt, and whose term ends in 2020. Then the Committee of Peace and Security of the Arab Group, represented by Khalid Al Bakar from Jordan and whose term ends in 2020 and Zeinab Ahmed Hassan Jaber from Sudan and her term ends in 2020. There is a request from the Sudanese National Council to replace her with the person named for last year, Ali Jassim Ahmed from the UAE who will be replaced as agreed last year.
