Qatar- NHRC holds seminar on CMC elections

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) organised a seminar for the candidates of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) elections on the rights and duties before and after the electoral process, attended by the candidates from 29 constituencies of the council in its sixth session.
NHRC member Mohamed Saif al-Kuwari said that running for elections is a positive sign to measure the extent to which an individual is open to the other. 'For an individual to run for election is a proof of his or her willingness to serve the society regardless of victory.
He presented facts and figures about previous sessions of the CMC since its first session in 1999.
Al-Kuwari underlined the negative aspects of some types of election propaganda, stressing the importance for the candidate to be realistic and credible. 'The promises the candidates make during the electoral programme are achievable, he said.
He said, 'Qatari voters have reached a stage of awareness that enables them to sense the credibility of the candidate through the electoral programme, adding that promises in an electoral programme are exaggerated and they may cause the candidate to fail.
He also highlighted the need for women to interact in any electoral process more especially in light of the state's tendency to open wider horizons for women's participation in the services and political scenes.
He added that participating in the electoral process is a national duty in terms of running and voting. He called on all Qatari people to cast their votes to deepen democratic behaviour among all members of society. (QNA)
