(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, April 3 (KUNA) -- Algerian Constitutional Council on Wednesday officially declared that the presidential post has become vacant, paving way for an interim presidency to be manned by the nation top legislator.
The council said in a statement that the assembly affirmed vacancy of the presidential port, according TO article 102 of the constitution, and indicated that the parliament was notified about the situation.
The declaration paves way for the parliament speaker to take over as the head of the state for 90 days.
President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, on Tuesday, notified the Constitutional Council that he had decided to step down.
Algeria has been witnessing wide-scale public demonstrations, demanding that the veteran leader Bouteflika step down, in addition to reforms in the public administration and better living standards. (end) mr.rk
