Israeli should join treaty on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons: Kuwait

(MENAFN - Gulf Times) Kuwait on Tuesday reiterated that Israel should join the Non-Proliferation Treaty and should also subject all its nuclear sites to review, expressing concern that Israel is the only country in the Middle East that has not joined the Treaty.

Speaking in a special session at the UN Security Council on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah renewed Kuwait's principled and firm stance against proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Kuwait condemns the use of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction by any state or any party at any time or place and considers it a serious violation of the international law, he affirmed.

While reiterating Kuwait's commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, he lamented the world still faces the menace of proliferation of nuclear weapons... ‘The people of our region are still yearning for the implementation of the resolution of the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference of 1995 on creating a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction,' he said.

He emphasized that the onus is on the state parties to the non-proliferation treaty to put in place the resolution and help achieve its objectives. (QNA)
