Afghanistan- Afghan women must be at peace talks table: Khalilzad

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): Soon after returning to Kabul, US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad met with Afghan officials and Afghan women rights activists in Kabul on Monday.

'Met with Kabul and provincial representatives of the Afghan Women's Network @AWNKabul to discuss many issues,' Khalilzad tweeted.

He said while Afghans alone would decide the composition of their delegation for talks, women must be at the table during all negotiations about peace and Afghanistan's future.

Meanwhile, Palwasha Hassan, the Afghan Women Education Center (AWEC)'s head, said they discussed with Khalilzad women's participation in the ongoing peace process and shared women's concerns in this regard.

The US envoy also met with Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah and Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and discussed with them how the international community could best support them in an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process.

Khalilzad began his latest peace mission on March 25 with visits to London and Brussels before traveling to Afghanistan.

He is also expected to visit Pakistan , Uzbekistan, Jordan and Qatar before returning to Washington on April 10.

Khalilzad had said in Brussels, US, EU and Nato officials talked about 'the meaningful political and social gains' in Afghanistan over the last 18 years, especially for women and children, and agreed that those gains 'must be prioritised' in the peace process.
