(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — Police on Saturday said they were investigating the death of a three-year-old child whose body was found in a building near her home in Zarqa earlier in the day, according to official sources.
The family of Nibal A. D. reported their daughter missing on Wednesday after she had failed to return home, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
On Saturday, police announced that they had found the body of the child in the basement of a building near her home in Zarqa.
'We are currently investigating the death of the child and urge the public not to spread rumours about the incident for the sake of the investigation and her family,' Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
The official said teams of police had been combing the area where the child lived since Wednesday, before deciding review nearby surveillance cameras and use K-9 units and drones in the search.
'A K-9 unit's dog traced the child's scent to a building close to her house,' Sartawi added.
A statement issued by the Public Security Department (PSD) and released to the press indicated that 'investigators questioned several individuals before the body was found but no charges or arrests were made'.
Hundreds of people used social media to highlight the disappearance urging the police and the public to help in the search for the missing child.
The victim's body was transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy, a medical source told The Jordan Times.
Sartawi said that the public would be notified about the cause of the child's death 'when the investigations are complete'.
According to media outlets, protesters late on Saturday allegedly set fire to the building where the young girl's body was found. However, this could not be immediately confirmed by The Jordan Times by the time of print.
