Tarawneh says Jordan resolute on Hashemite Custodianship

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh on Wednesday stressed that Jerusalem is not a bargaining chip and the Hashemite Custodianship over the Holy City's Islamic and Christian sites will not waver.

The speaker's remarks came during a ceremony held at the University of Jordan to celebrate the 51th anniversary of the Karameh Battle, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

"Talking about the Karameh Battle leads us to Jerusalem," the speaker said, adding that the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) who slapped the 'enemy' in the face on that day is the same that has made the supreme sacrifices in Palestine.

"The victory in the Karameh Battle proved that the enemy was not invincible," he said.

Tarawneh highlighted that Jordan takes pride in the Hashemite Custodianship, on behalf of Arab and Islamic nations, noting that the Kingdom will continue supporting the Holy City until the Palestinians obtain their legitimate rights of establishing their independent state.

During the ceremony, organised by the Aoun Cultural Society, Tarawneh, who has been elected as the president of the the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (APU), stressed that the Lower House, in coordination with other parliaments, will take active steps to unify stances against the occupation during the upcoming APU meeting scheduled for early next month.
