First stop was the Costa Mesa Women's Club, where Mayor Foley spoke about current conditions in the city, as well as several upcoming and ongoing projects. The opening of a temporary 50-bed homeless shelter at Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene was discussed, along with an overview of plans for a permanent shelter near the airport. The completion and upcoming dedication of the new library - part of the larger Lions Park Projects - was also well received.
On Sunday afternoon, the Democrats of Greater Irvine hosted a panel of local leaders tackling homelessness in Orange County. Mayor Foley was a featured speaker and Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris gave the keynote address. Having worked with both women previously, the event provided Matt Fitt an outstanding opportunity to document their ongoing work, in unison with other leaders, to move toward a positive solution to the severe homeless situation in the county.
