The latest SEEK (ASX:SEK) (OTCMKTS:SKLTY) Employment Report showed a decline in job advertising of 3.6% compared to February 2018. However, the average advertised salary across Australia rose 3.2% year on year.
STATE OF THE NATION:

o SEEK jobs ads are down by 3.6%
o Average advertised salary up by 3.2%
- Top five industries driving job ad growth nationally are Government & Defence, Healthcare & Medical, Education & Training, Community Services & Development and Mining, Resources & Energy.

- Tasmania (+4.7%) and Western Australia (+3.7%) continue to show the strongest y/y growth in new job ads
- All states and territories saw y/y advertised salary growth above 3%, with the Northern Territory and South Australia leading (4.7% and 4.9% respectively)

Information & Communications Technology, although down during February, over the past 12 months as a whole we have seen 8.1% growth.

"A trend continuing in to 2019 is the labour force demand in the public sector, particularly for Community Services and Healthcare & Medical candidates. Both have been driven by an increasing ageing population with job opportunities rising across Nursing Aged Care and Age Support workers. Positions within these industries are ever-evolving and are diverse in the skills and experience hirers require from candidates."
While several industries experienced steady growth in February, a decline occurred in job ads for Design & Architecture (-20.4 %), Real Estate & Property (-15.8%) and Construction (-14.2%).
With the exception of Tasmania (+4.7%) and Western Australia (+3.7%) which continue to grow, all other states witnessed a drop in job ad volume.
"We have seen a slowdown in job advertising which has been driven by a number of factors including a decline in demand for workers in real-estate and construction, business and consumer confidence and the upcoming election. We will be interested to see if the growth in the other major employing industries along with the commencement of large infrastructure projects creates enough employment opportunities to offset this decline", said Kendra.
Interestingly, SEEK data suggests that the rise in average advertised salary at a national level is driven by a change in the mix of job ads, where lower paying jobs are declining at a faster rate than higher paying jobs.
