STATE OF THE NATION: FRONTLINE SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGY PATHING THE WAY

Kendra Banks, Managing Director, SEEK ANZ comments: "Whilst overall job advertising is down year on year, large employing industries including Healthcare and Medical as well as Government and Defence continue to perform strongly - creating employment opportunities across the country. Information & Communications Technology, although down during February, over the past 12 months as a whole we have seen 8.1% growth.

Table 1: Top five contributing industries to job ad growth by volume compared to February 2018

---------------------------------------------------------------INDUSTRY PERCENTAGE GROWTH (Y/Y FEBRUARY 2019) ---------------------------------------------------------------Government & Defence 17.3%Healthcare & Medical 11%Education & Training 8.9%Community Services & Development 10.9%Mining, Resources & Energy 10.2% ---------------------------------------------------------------
"A trend continuing in to 2019 is the labour force demand in the public sector, particularly for Community Services and Healthcare & Medical candidates. Both have been driven by an increasing ageing population with job opportunities rising across Nursing Aged Care and Age Support workers. Positions within these industries are ever-evolving and are diverse in the skills and experience hirers require from candidates."

While several industries experienced steady growth in February, a decline occurred in job ads for Design & Architecture (-20.4 %), Real Estate & Property (-15.8%) and Construction (-14.2%).

With the exception of Tasmania (+4.7%) and Western Australia (+3.7%) which continue to grow, all other states witnessed a drop in job ad volume.

"We have seen a slowdown in job advertising which has been driven by a number of factors including a decline in demand for workers in real-estate and construction, business and consumer confidence and the upcoming election. We will be interested to see if the growth in the other major employing industries along with the commencement of large infrastructure projects creates enough employment opportunities to offset this decline", said Kendra.

Interestingly, SEEK data suggests that the rise in average advertised salary at a national level is driven by a change in the mix of job ads, where lower paying jobs are declining at a faster rate than higher paying jobs.

About the SEEK Employment Report

The SEEK Employment Report provides a comprehensive overview of the Australian Employment Marketplace. The report includes the SEEK Employment Index (SEI), which is the first Australia aggregate indicator to measure the interaction between labour market supply and labour market demand.

It also includes the SEEK New Job Ad Index which measures only new job ads posted within the reported month to provide a clean measure of demand for labour across all classifications.

SEEK's total job ad volume (not disclosed in this report) includes duplicated job advertisements and refreshed job ads. As a result, the SEEK New Job Ad Index does not always match the movement in SEEK's total job ad volume.
