(MENAFN) Police declared that one police officer was gunned down as three more were injured in a gunfight with a rebel group in Indonesia's eastern Papua province on Wednesday.
The province's Police Chief Insp. Gen. Martuani Sormin confirmed that the incident occurred in Mugi of Nduga district where construction of 4,600 km Trans-Papua Highway project and 16 bridges are ongoing.
The police chief added that the gunfight broke out when the personnel of mobile brigade police were securing a chopper which was just about to arrive in Mugi for unloading logistics.
The rebels whom are named "criminal armed group" by police suddenly started shootin at the police personnel, sparking the clashes, according to Sormin.
