Qatar- Grand final debate of the fifth IUDC at QNCC today

Doha: Teams from Qatar University and Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Jordan, will participate in the grand final debate of the Fifth International Universities Arabic Debating Championship (IUDC), today at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC).

The championship, organised by Qatar Debate Center (QD) is held under the patronage of H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation (QF) with the participation of more than 100 universities from 51 countries.

The largest debating championship feature 107 teams from universities across the world. The championship witnessed participants passionately presenting arguments in favor of and against several topics such as sports, human rights, politics, and economics.

Four top teams debated during the semi-final round yesterday. Participants from the top four qualifying teams were from Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Jordan, University of Amar Telidji, Algeria, Qatar University (boys team) and the Harvard University.

Princess Sumaya University for Technology is participating for the second time in the championship and its team member Mohammad Hattab said, ' It's a true honour to be here and take part in the world's largest debating championship.

'The experience has been phenomenal we are looking forward to the final debate with excitement, he told The Peninsula. Six teams were participating in the championship and two of them were from Qatar University.

Mazen Abdelfattah from Qatar University (boys) team said, 'The university has won the championship twice before and that has given us a big responsibility. But we had the privilege of getting trained by those who took part in the previous tournaments, which really made a difference.

Referring to a debate they had with the team from Brazil, Abdelfattah said, 'They are from a non native Arabic speaking background, but we lost to them, it shows that this championship looks into debating skills.

Teams from Princess Sumaya University for Technology and Qatar University also addressed a press conference and shared their experience.

Dr Al Moatasem Al Mamari from Oman and moderator of the press conference said, 'Fifth IUDC gave students across the world a platform to participate in debates, interact with other students from different universities while enhancing their skills to research, analyze and speak persuasively.
