Stage set for grand final of QatarDebate championship


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Boys team from Qatar University and Princess Sumaya University for Technology, Jordan, have qualified to the grand final debate of the 5th International Universities Arabic Debating Championship.
The championship organised by QatarDebate Centre features 107 teams from 51 Arabic and non-Arabic countries. Held under the patronage of HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al-Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, the five-day championship will come to an end today at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
The programme on the fourth day witnessed the semi-final round with the top four teams battling their way to the grand final.
Participants from the top four qualifying teams that included Princess Sumaya University for Technology - Jordan, University of Amar Telidji - Algeria, Qatar University Boys and the Harvard University from the US agreed that all debate rounds were very competitive, and they were aiming to win each round with logic, reasoning and persuasion for the very thought-provoking debate motions. Debaters from Qatar University Boys and Princess Sumaya University for Technology - Jordan who have qualified for the finals, noted that the art of debate is an essential aspect of the daily lives and appreciated QatarDebate for organising the championship.
Meanwhile, QatarDebate also informed that nine non-Arabic speaking countries had participated in the championship for the first time. These countries included Kyrgyzstan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Thailand, and Azerbaijan among others.
Debaters from these countries highlighted the importance of participating in this international debating championship in their learning journey. They also noted that they had heard a lot about Qatar before they got a chance to visit. They appreciated the great efforts being made by the Qatari institutions to spread Arabic language. They also pointed out that it was a great opportunity for them to hone their Arabic debating skills and such opportunities would pave the way for them to outclass other teams in future championships.
