Over 109,000 Omani Labour Law violators arrested in 5 years

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Manpower (MoM) has arrested 109,277 illegal workers in the past five years (2014-18). In an emailed reply to Muscat Daily , the ministry said that it has also conducted a study on absconding expatriate workers.

It is titled, 'The expatriate labourers who have absconded from their jobs - which they are authorised to work in (Causes, Risks and Proposed Solutions)'.

The study focuses on expatriate workers who run away from their jobs, the reasons and proposed solutions to tackle the problem.
MoM has said that it is working on several fronts to tackle the problem of illegal workforce in the country.

'The problem of illegal labourers is being looked into by us to regulate the job market. Illegal workforce has an adverse effect on the nation's labour market, security and economy.

'These illegal workers are employed in small and medium sized projects and it is a phenomenon that exists in all countries. The reason behind the increase in their numbers is connected to the population density and the volume of development projects and investments.'

The ministry is working to tackle this problem, first by regulating the labour market through the introduction of laws concerning illegal workers and second through inspections. 'These teams work around the clock in cooperation with the competent authorities and make visits to the work sites based on tip-offs.

MoM said that its inspection teams follow-up with private sector organisations from time to time to ensure there are no unauthorised labourers employed in their premises.

'All private sector organisations have to abide by the Omani Labour Law and the ministerial decisions,' it said.
